Sarah DeWitt Brooks- Artist Teacher
My Studio
I am a teacher and an artist. I don't have a studio where I escape to make art. I make art in two places- my home and my classroom. I try to set aside time each week to make art. Sometimes the only art I have time to make is with my students during class. Sometimes I make art late at night after my son has gone to sleep for the night. Sometimes I stay late at school to sculpt, for one or two hours a week, because at home I don't have a quiet space where I can make a big artistic mess without worrying about the carpet. Sometimes my ideas come to me while I am sitting in front of my computer, absorbed in a web page. Sometimes while I am soaking away my stiff and sore teacher body in the shower. Sometimes, I have to sneak into my bedroom- where my art supplies are stored, where my son sleeps, and dig around for supplies in the dark.
Even though all of these things reign true, I know that I am an artist, and when I give the art time, it happens. In small increments over time, art happens and I am proud that I have hung on to that in the midst of my chaotic life as a teacher and mother.
